Wahl 5537-1801 Beard Trimmer Review

The Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer

The Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer, is chock full of features and abilities and at ten to fifteen bucks is probably the best value beard trimmer currently available.

The Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer, is chock full of features and abilities, for ten to fifteen bucks. It’s not easy to get past that when you realize that it’s not just a beard trimmer, but comes with a separate, dedicated ear, nose and brow trimmer as well.

That’s two units for the price of a Happy Meal, well just about. If you’re thinking it’s just a generic trimmer or shaver then you’d be wrong on both counts. To be clear, this is not a shaver, so you’re not going to get a clean shave, and this is not a run-of-the-mill trimmer, what it is, is a budget waterproof beard trimmer that will give you a reasonable (if not fancy) beard trim.

The Basics of the Wahl 5537-1801

Wahl 5537-1801 Beard TrimmerThe Wahl 5537-180 comes with 11 items in the box, none of which is a cord or charger. If you are looking for something to plug in to a wall outlet, you won’t find it. For me, I like keeping my bathroom counter clear of clutter and the cord really cramps my style. Instead of using an internal power source and a cord to charge it, the Wahl uses regular (AA) batteries, which do not come in the box.

The main surprise for most, and for me as well, is that the box contains two hand units. One that holds the beard and mustache trimmer, which is usually a wider blade setup, and it a separate narrow-format ear and nose trimmer. There are other manufacturers who try to make them all in one, but that opens up a whole new can of worms. Having two separate units allows me to use the right tool for the task at hand.

I’ve had two-in-ones before, and you can’t use a battering ram to swat a mosquito, which is what it feels like when you try to use a beard trimmer to groom your nostrils.

All the extra gadgets in the world would be pointless, if the trimmer failed to do its main task adequately. In this regard, the blades perform admirably when called to ranks. The blades are made form high-quality carbon steel, which means two things. First, that the blades are hard, and that keeps them sharp for a long time. Second, it means that they won’t rust, and that keeps increases their longevity.

The Wahl 5537-180 comes with four beard guards, meaning  have five lengths to choose from when you’re sculpting your beard, mustache or goatee. The attachment locks into place and is also easily detachable. However, do keep in mind that they are all made from plastic, so a little care is in order. Too many instances of rough handling and you’re going to get broken beard guards. The lengths vary between 1/16th, 1/8th and 3/16th of an inch. For me it works out exactly as I need it and aside from times when I wash the head, the beard guard is perpetually on. In fact the other three other guards are still in the box, untouched.

The Good and the Bad with the Wahl 5537-1801

The great thing I like about the Wahl 5537-180 is that it’s extremely affordable and works as I hoped it would. Maybe my standards are just not high enough, but for me, all I need it to do is trim my manly hair on a daily basis and to the exact length I want, without it pulling it out of its follicle. This Wahl 5537-1801 does that superbly. Everything else is a bonus.

The ear and hair trimmer is something I use occasionally and sits on my counter in the storage base. The combs and brush, I don’t use as I already have my own. They are all nice to have but not essential.  The mineral oil that comes in the box lasts forever. At just a drop at a time every week, it takes quite a while to go through the vial. I also like that in has the Wahl 2-year guarantee. I’ve never had to use it, but from what I hear, the customer service experience during warranty claims is excellent.

One of the advantages of not having a cord, aside from the cumbersome nature of it, is that I don’t have to worry about what voltage is coming out of the wall. This is especially useful as I travel extensively and my beard trimmer always comes with me.

The main downside with the Wahl 5537-180 is that the casing feels a little flimsy. It is made of rather thin plastic and there is no solid tactile feedback from it when you hold it. It is also not entirely shaped well so you have to be dexterous just to drive the shaving head around your chin. But, fortunately, there is no cord to get in the way.

One thing I hope the designers at Wahl adopt, in the next iteration of this model, is a different power switch. I have noted on more than one occasion where the trimmer keeps going after I’ve flipped it to the off position. It may be a manufacturing flaw, I am not sure, but it doesn’t happen frequently enough, nor does it bother me enough to opt for a new trimmer. It is after all just ten to fifteen bucks and as long as I get out the door every morning sporting a neat beard, I think I am ahead of the game.

I certainly like the Wahl 5537-1801 Beard Trimmer as I feel it to be an absolute bargain when it comes to my personal grooming. It does as it’s supposed to and it has the necessary functions without becoming overwhelming.
