Are you looking for an alternative to waxing for removing your unwanted body hair?

I understand. Being perfectly smooth, head to toe is simply the desired way to be these days. But see, I have this problem. Actually, it’s multiple problems. I don’t like tweezing. For one, it takes forever. For two, it almost always leads to ingrown hairs in most places on my body. Waxing works great, except for one thing. I’m kind of modest, and I’m not really comfortable going to a spa or salon to be waxed. And waxing at home with one of those do-it-yourself kits just didn’t work for me.

So, several months ago, in an ongoing quest to rid me of my unwanted body hair, I decided to find the best bikini epilator on the market. I had been using an epilator on and off for years, but I wanted to see for myself which ones could do the best job for me. I read some epilator reviews, and then tried some of those models. I’m thrilled to be able to share my epilator reviews with you here!

Advantages of using an epilator

  • For about the price of getting your legs waxed one time, you can get an epilator, so it will pay for itself in the first use.
  • An epilator travels with you, but your waxer cannot. You can clean up little areas or remove hair in additional spots as needed without having to wait for an appointment.
  • No worries about needing to cancel an appointment for bad weather.

Types of Epilators

types of epilators

There are three different types of epilators, and they each remove your unwanted body hair through a group of small tweezing devices. The first type of epilator is the tweezer epilator. These hair removal devices using spinning metal discs that open and close during the discs rotations. Each time they open and close, they are removing several unwanted hairs.

Spring type epilators are copied from the original epilator, introduced to the world in 1986. The springs in this type of epilator are wrapped in coils on the head of the epi. When it is turned on, the springs work to quickly capture your hairs and remove them by their roots. For some women, a spring epilator is the only one they would ever consider using. The original Epilady is still one of the best selling epilators on the market today. The rotating disc epilator is similar to the spring, only ceramic discs are used instead.

When you ask some women to explain what an epilator is, their explanation is usually rather simple. An epilator is a life-saving device that removes all of your unwanted body hair. It saves time, money, and you don’t have to shave again.

How to find the best epilator for you

  • best epilator reviewsLook at the number of tweezers the epilator has in the head. If you’re just starting out with this, or any, method of hair removal, you want a lower number of tweezers. If you’ve done this before, or have a low pain threshold, then you can move to a higher number of tweezers for faster hair removal.
  • Most epilators are fairly loud. Some are really loud. If noise is a consideration for you, make sure that you find a quieter unit. Of course, if you’re looking for a quieter unit, you will probably have to get an epilator that has a lower number of tweezers, because models that have more tweezers have to have a more powerful motor, and more powerful equals louder.
  • Removal of facial hair is one of the most common reasons for choosing an epilator. Make sure that the model you’ve chosen has the appropriate heads for that task if that’s what you’re looking for. Facial hairs are thinner and not as coarse, so tweezers designed to grasp leg hairs may have a hard time with those smaller, finer hairs. Look for an epilator with a facial hair head or attachment.
  • This will sound a bit strange but look at the lighting in your house before you purchase an epilator. My house is fairly dark, and there’s just not a lot of natural light. Having an epilator with a light on it is essential for me.
  • Not every epilator can be used in the shower. If that’s an important feature for you, make sure that you’re searching for a “wet-dry” model.

Cool Facts About My Journey to Using Epilators

While I was doing my research on the different brands of epilators, I learned a lot about the history of body hair removal. I had always thought it was rather recent, especially the desire to remove hair in the bikini area. However, I learned that while the epilator, as we know it today, is a fairly recent invention, body hair removal itself is as old as time.

Women have been removing their hair for centuries. During the Roman Empire, pubic hair was considered to be a sign of people with less class or standing. Queen Elizabeth I removed her eyebrows and the hair from her forehead, to make the forehead appear larger. In 1760, French barber Jean Jacque Perret invented the straight edge razor for men. Women have been borrowing men’s razors ever since.

During the Victorian age, it became more standard for women to start removing their body hair, with the introduction of the first razors for women. Depilatory creams and powders began being advertised, and women were shown in ads with bare arms and hairless armpits. Hair removal became far more popular during World War II as rationing of nylon made going bare-legged a necessity.

Both waxing and laser hair removal became available in the 1960s, but laser treatments often caused skin damage, so they weren’t very popular. Electric methods of hair removal had been around for generations but weren’t very safe. In the 70s, new methods of building epilators increased their safety factor, and machines like the Epilady were widely marketed.

Choosing an epilator is dependent upon several factors. You have to decide what level of expertise you have with this tool, and what level of pain you’re willing to put up with to achieve the look that you want. You’ll have to weigh various factors such as weight, ability to use it without a cord, and extra accessories before you can decide which is the best epilator for you.  For both women and men epilators are here to stay. Make sure that you read some epilator reviews so that you can gain other people’s perspectives before you make your decision.
